Mark Puente

Staff Writer

I report on policing, the courts, judicial misconduct and more in Cleveland. I hold elected and public officials accountable for their policies that have negative consequences on the community and government workers.

My Background

Prior to becoming an investigative journalist, my wife and I became the parents of three children, starting at the age of 19. I drove a tractor-trailer for 15 years before enrolling in college. As a journalist, my investigative work has twice been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. I am honored to have won numerous awards for investigative and accountability reporting and the Al Nakkula Award for Police Reporting, the only national journalism award devoted to police coverage.

With a blue-collar background, I know the struggles that people face each day. I am passionate about investigative journalism because many traditional journalists have failed the working class and Brown and Black people ensnared in the criminal justice system.

When I am not chasing tips about bad actors and failed government policies, I can often be found next to my meat smoker, cooking for my family and friends.
