I really like your article, I spend nearly $200 a month to talk to prisoners across the U.S. Mostly in Calif. and Florida. I was in prison for 26 years myself and I know how important outside contact with family and friends are. I hate the dropped calls or when they disconnect because they say "no 3rd party calls," when there are none. They really took advantage of prisoners in Calif years ago. But it changed a bit for the better about 10 years ago.
One thing that is really bad is the private prisons…[they] will charge $5 for sick calls which is normal, but a normal prison will take it off after 30 days. Not the private prison, it stays on! If I want to send money to someone who doesn't get any, it just goes to pay the sick call bills. And believe me it adds up in a year if you’re over 50. It's all a business (money) for the private prison. You can only imagine how many corners are cut...
