I just Googled the phrase "habeas corpus calculator" and was surprised not to find any. It seems to me that the capital defense groups, the malpractice carriers and (theoretically) the courts all have an interest in making sure that habeas deadlines are accurately calculated, alerted and met. Technology and a little cooperation could solve this problem by creating a calculator, much of which could probably be automated through tags with case numbers and feeds from courts that have feeds or manual input for those which don't. Is there any movement afoot to develop such a system?
Response from Letters Editor:
Hi Chris, Thanks for writing. There is actually a non-technological system in place in about one-fifth of the country’s federal judicial districts that has proven successful. Ken writes more about it here.
