Gabriel Isman has been named the new Director of Technology at The Marshall Project.

Isman, who previously worked as a software engineer at Google, combines sophisticated engineering skills with a demonstrated passion for the issues that drive The Marshall Project.

"I have found mission-driven work is so much more fulfilling than my purely technical jobs ever were," said Isman. "I couldn't be more excited to be joining The Marshall Project in bringing much-needed transparency to the criminal justice system."

"This seems like a match made in Online Journalism Heaven," said Bill Keller, editor-in-chief of The Marshall Project.

Before joining Google, Isman was a software engineer at Skillshare. More recently, he was a Knight Foundation Prototype Fund grantee and worked with the Prison Policy Initiative and the Freedom of the Press Foundation. He is a graduate of Oberlin College, where he studied computer science.

Isman will build on The Marshall Project's custom Content Management System to produce visually compelling journalism for themarshallproject.org, named “World's Best Designed News Site” in 2016 by the Society for News Design. Isman's initial ambitions include further widening and engaging The Marshall Project's audience, and leveraging the power of technology in reporting data-rich stories and presenting them in novel ways.
