Thanks to a grant from the Tow Foundation, The Marshall Project is offering a year-long audience engagement fellowship in 2021 to a recent graduate of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. The fellowship is paid and open to graduates from the classes of 2015 or later, including those who will graduate in December.

The Tow fellow will work under the supervision of the newsroom and in collaboration with our audience engagement editor to continue expanding our reach to new audiences. These audiences include those traditionally not well-served by news media, such as incarcerated people and their loved ones. The Tow fellow will help devise strategies to communicate with, and incorporate feedback from, a wide circle of readers who are either affected by, or care about, criminal justice. This should include multiple forms of storytelling and brainstorming about the best ways to communicate with audiences that may not typically turn to, or trust, news sites.

The fellow will work across social media and email newsletters to find and engage new audiences. They will also work closely with reporters to develop social-media call-outs to aid in long-term investigations and reporting. The fellow will use Google Analytics, Parse.ly, Chartbeat and other tools to gain insight into The Marshall Project’s audiences and develop strategies for cultivating them. Experience in search engine optimization would be highly desirable.

WHO WE ARE

The Marshall Project is a nonprofit news organization dedicated to covering America’s criminal justice system. In 2016, The Marshall Project was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism and was a Pulitzer finalist for investigative reporting. We are not advocates—we follow the facts and we do not pander to any audience—but we have a declared mission: to create and sustain a sense of urgency about the criminal justice system. We do not generally cover breaking news (although we curate the reporting of other news outlets in our morning newsletter). Our work includes investigative and explanatory projects and shorter pieces aimed at highlighting stories that other news organizations miss, underestimate or misunderstand. To ensure our work reaches a larger audience we partner or co-publish with other media outlets on almost all of our work; we have partnered with more than 150 newspapers, magazines, broadcasters and online sites.

We are an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity. We welcome qualified applicants of all races, ethnicities, physical abilities, genders and sexual orientations, including people who have been incarcerated or otherwise involved with the criminal justice system.

Qualified applicants should have demonstrated experience in social media and audience development and have graduated from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY within the last five years. We will accept applications until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Nov. 30. To apply, please use this form.
