The Marshall Project is seeking a Director of Development to help guide its growth and expand its team of fundraisers to ensure the organization’s financial and operational health.
As a nonprofit newsroom covering criminal justice, The Marshall Project is more than a team of reporters and editors. The Director of Development occupies a senior position, reporting directly to the President and fully engaged in the strategic guidance of a fast-growing independent media organization.
The Marshall Project is three years old, still small, nimble and willing to experiment. Applicants should be self-starters who are creative, thoughtful, and highly efficient.
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the Director of Development will include but are not limited to the following:
Guide, direct, and participate in all fundraising efforts, including major gifts (individual giving), foundations, and a burgeoning membership program.
Maintain relationships with top donors and prospects.
Oversee the day-to-day development operations, including the management of the database.
Ensure that all deadlines are met, acknowledgements are sent and potential supporters are engaged.
Draft or edit others’ drafts of grant proposals and reports.
Work with the President on all board activities to plan board meetings, work with board committees, board development, and deepen their engagement in our mission.
Work closely with the Director of Strategy and Communications on public events in cities across the country.
Collaborate with others in the nonprofit media world to share experiences and learning among a hardy but dynamic cohort of independent journalism organizations.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience
Minimum 5 years of demonstrated experience in fundraising and development or in related fields, preferably in the nonprofit sector
Proven track record of fundraising with major donors and foundations as well as experience with developing an individual giving program
Strong understanding of all types of fundraising sources
Facility with Salesforce or comparable CRM database management system a plus
Strong organizational skills with proven ability to focus, prioritize and implement
Strong writing and interpersonal skills
Understanding of current trends in journalism and a passion for social justice issues a plus
Some travel required
